GURPSHammer: Vagir's Campaign Session 1

Let's get started with the GURPSHammer adventures I mentioned earlier.  This adventure was originally written July 14, 2014 (according to Google Docs, anyways).  I don't think I had GM'd much in a year or more at this point, so I kept it basic.  Really, one of my goals was to keep every session pretty simple, such that I could fit everything on a single printed page.  In retrospect a lot of this could be more condensed, further saving space (though probably not making much sense after only a short while!)

Original Session Document

Time:  Late Morning
Location:  A rough dirt road cutting through a forest.

Vasily is in a position along a road when he encounters a pair travellers- one male, one female, both well dressed and sharing a horse.  They are riding west, and Vasily faces their left side.

The woman is gagged, her hands are bound, shoeless and disheveled in spite of her fine dress.  The man, similarly well dressed but better kept, wears a rapier on his left hip.

The horse is a good looking steed with a smooth gait.  It is saddled and carries bags.

Confronting the travellers
If confronted, the man (Yolkov Tarasovich) will be hostile.  He will call out Vasily as a peasant and berate him if he blocks the path; he speaks in an educated fashion.  The woman (Ana Petrov), eyes appearing almost hopeful, will make noise, but the gag is tight.  This will provoke rebuke from the man.

He will divulge his business as having captured this woman - a witch - and is bringing her in (next town is Kolezesk, about 4 miles) for reward money and to do the work of God (FAST TALK 9 vs PER 7 (12-5)).  He won't respond to questions about her capture.  If he is pushed much further, he will ride off.

If blocked or really harassed (threatened with a pistol, for example), he will attempt to ride anyone in his way down.  Unfortunately, it is hard for him to maneuver his horse like this with the woman in the way, so after one or two RIDING 8 attempts (1d-2 damage due to close confines), he will get frustrated and ride off a short distance.

Because Yolkov is a bully and won't let an insolent peasant treat him like this, he will dismount (tying the reins in with the woman’s binds) and engage on foot.

Yolkov is a moderately decent fencer and was educated under a Llandish fencing master.
HP 10/FP10
DO 9, PY 9
RAPIER 12 / FEINT 12
1d - 1 IMP, R 1, 2
He favors quick, aggressive fights, but sticks to his sword and lacks other fighting skill:
Default:  All Out Attack (Double):  Feint 12 / Attack 12
Out of Range:  All Out Attack (Long) / Great Lunge (-1 FP, can defend)
On Defense:  Fencing Retreat, +3 Parry/Dodge (never uses special defenses)

Had this been a less hot-blooded day, he might have been otherwise more tactical.
The Woman:  Defeating him and freeing the woman will let her reveal she was abducted from his father’s hall (near Volask, east of here).  She is a cousin and was visiting with her family when he made the capture.  She does not know why, only that he came and took her late in the night.  She doesn’t know where they are and isn’t sure how long they were riding.  She’ll reveal his name (Yolkov) and hers (Ana).  She’ll beg for escort back to where she came from, insisting her father, who is there, would pay for her safe return.

The Loot:  Riding horse with tack; the saddlebags are empty but attached.  On the man is a rapier (moderately decorative but worn and obviously used before), nice leather gloves, riding boots, about G$100 in coin, and a note (breast pocket) with the following:
Kolezesk, Brawny Bear, Barashev, Sundown, Friday

Session Notes

This one has references to Iron Kingdoms, as the names are Slavic rather than Germanic, and calls out a generic "God" rather than Sigmar (or others).  In fact, Vagir's original name was Vasily.  Elsewhere in my notes, I reference this having taken place on 1 May 2525.

"Vagir" survived this one, killed the guy, rescued the girl.  I made the following notes on my printed copy:

The antagonist -1 HP from falling off horse, -7 from staff blow, -12 from staff blow
Woman -1 HP from falling off horse

After using a branch to check the horse, the riders fell.

Getting up, he [the rider] confronted Vasily, who's pistol shot failed.

A brief exchange at arms, Vasily brained the rider.

He freed the girl and took her home.

Closing

I need to check out Darkest Dungeon
Simple stuff.  I seem to remember the fight going back-and-forth in attack and defense, until a fortunate staff blow just about lays the rapierist out.  It only took a little while longer to finish the job.  Body got stashed in the brush somewhere, and he took just about everything.

The next session will find its way up here shortly.

Thanks for reading!

Cheers!
